Emma Stone looked as though she was going to cry when accepting the Best Actress award for her performance in Poor Things at the Oscars, while also having to deal with a wardrobe malfunction at the same time.
As she took the awards show stage, American actress and film producer Emma Stone announced her dress had broken during Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken performance at the Oscars. At the 96th Academy Award ceremony, Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Bella Baxter in the hit comedy/sci-fi movie Poor Things. On Sunday 10 March, Stone wowed the red carpet outside Hollywood‘s Dolby Theatre in a custom strapless Louis Vuitton look.
Emma walks onto the stage choking back tears
The actor was dressed by top fashion and celebrity stylist Petra Flannery and her blue/green coloured outfit featured a flared peplum waist and shell-like detailing.
In this year’s Best Actress category, Stone was up against Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon, Annette Bening of Nyad, Carey Mulligan of Maestro, and Sandra Hüller of Anatomy of a Fall.
When Emma Stone was announced as the winner, she walked towards the stage while covering the back of her dress with her hand and appearing to mouth: “My dress is broken!”
Emma Stone accepted the award and began her speech by acknowledging the wardrobe malfunction, which appeared to be a broken zipper or seam on the back of her gown.
The 35-year-old star blamed the clothing tear on her passionate cheering during Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken performance of his song from the Barbie movie. She explained: “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken.’”
Stone began to well up as she tried to hold back her tears and explain to the audience that she was feeling overwhelmed, she then directed attention to each of her fellow nominees.
She said: “I share this with you; I’m in awe of you; and it’s been such an honor to do all this together.
Once she had thanked her cast members and loved ones, the winner then begged the audience not to look at the back of her dress as she exited the stage.
Emma Stone blamed Ryan Gosling’s Oscar performance
Speaking to the press after her Best Actress Oscar win, Emma Stone was asked about her broken dress and she revealed: “They sewed me back in, which was wonderful.”
The two-time Oscar winner explained: “I genuinely do think I busted it during ‘I’m just Ken.’ I was so amazed by Ryan and what he was doing and that number blew my mind. I was right there, and I was going for it, and things happen.”
Stone still appeared to be quite emotional when talking to reporters about the situation, and many fans think she was just super proud to have won the award.
